What is Density?
Density is a measure of how tightly packed the molecules of a substance are. It is defined as the mass of a substance per unit volume. The SI unit of density is kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m^3). The same as its imperial counterpart, kilograms per cubic feet (kg/ft³).

The density of a substance can be used to determine its state of matter. Solids have the highest density, followed by liquids, and then gases. The density of a substance can also be used to calculate its mass, volume, or concentration.
Solving Density Problems
To solve density problems, you need to know the following formulas:
Mass = Density x Volume
Volume = Mass / Density
Density = Mass / Volume
To solve a density problem, simply plug the given values into the appropriate formula. For example:
-
What is the density of a rock that has a mass of 10 kg and a volume of 2 m^3?
Density = Mass / Volume
= 10 kg / 2 m^3
= 5 kg/m^3 -
What is the volume of a liquid that has a mass of 500 g and a density of 1.2 g/mL?
Volume = Mass / Density
= 500 g / 1.2 g/mL
= 416.67 mL -
What is the mass of a gas that has a volume of 10 L and a density of 0.5 g/L?
Mass = Density x Volume
= 0.5 g/L x 10 L
= 5 g
