Overview
The Alabama A&M University (AAMU) Financial Aid Office is dedicated to providing financial assistance to eligible students to help them cover the cost of college. The office offers a wide range of financial aid programs, including grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study programs.

Financial Aid Programs
Grants
Grants are free money that does not have to be repaid. AAMU offers a variety of grants, including:
- Federal Pell Grant: This grant is available to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. The maximum award amount for the 2023-2024 academic year is $6,895.
- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG): This grant is available to undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. The maximum award amount for the 2023-2024 academic year is $4,000.
- Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP) Grant: This grant is available to Alabama residents who demonstrate financial need. The maximum award amount for the 2023-2024 academic year is $2,500.
Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded based on merit, such as academic achievement, athletic ability, or financial need. AAMU offers a variety of scholarships, including:
- Presidential Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen who have a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher and an ACT score of 27 or higher. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, and room and board.
- Academic Excellence Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen who have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher and an ACT score of 24 or higher. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition and fees.
- Athletic Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who meet certain academic and athletic criteria. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, room and board, and books.
Loans
Loans are borrowed money that must be repaid with interest. AAMU offers a variety of loans, including:
- Federal Direct Subsidized Loan: This loan is available to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. The government pays the interest on the loan while the student is in school.
- Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan: This loan is available to undergraduate and graduate students. The student is responsible for paying the interest on the loan.
- Federal Direct PLUS Loan: This loan is available to parents of undergraduate students. The parent is responsible for repaying the loan.
Work-Study Programs
Work-study programs allow students to earn money to help pay for college expenses. AAMU offers a variety of work-study programs, including:
- Federal Work-Study Program: This program provides part-time jobs to students who demonstrate financial need. The jobs are typically on campus and related to the student’s field of study.
- Alabama Work-Study Program: This program provides part-time jobs to Alabama residents who demonstrate financial need. The jobs are typically off campus and not related to the student’s field of study.
Applying for Financial Aid
To apply for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.gov.
The FAFSA deadline for the 2023-2024 academic year is March 1, 2024. However, students are encouraged to apply as early as possible to ensure that they receive the maximum amount of financial aid.
