Cornell Lost and Found: Your Guide to Recovering Lost Items on Campus Tips for Preventing Lost Items Additional Resources

Cornell University is a bustling campus with thousands of students, faculty, and staff passing through its halls every day. With so many people coming and going, it’s inevitable that items will get lost. If you’ve lost something on campus, don’t despair! There are a few things you can do to increase your chances of finding it.

Report Lost Items

The first step is to report your lost item to the Cornell Police Department (CUPD). You can do this in person at the CUPD headquarters in Goldwin Smith Hall, or by calling (607) 255-1111. When you report your item, be sure to provide the following information:

  • A detailed description of the item, including its brand, model, color, and any other distinguishing features
  • The date and time you lost the item
  • The location where you lost the item
  • Your contact information

Check the Lost and Found

Once you’ve reported your lost item, be sure to check the Cornell Lost and Found. The Lost and Found is located in the basement of Willard Straight Hall. It is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

When you visit the Lost and Found, be sure to bring your Cornell ID card. You will also need to provide a detailed description of your lost item. If your item is in the Lost and Found, you will be able to claim it by showing your ID card and providing a description of the item.

File a Claim

If you are unable to find your lost item in the Lost and Found, you can file a claim with the Cornell University Risk Management and Insurance Department. To file a claim, you will need to provide the following information:

  • A detailed description of the item, including its brand, model, color, and any other distinguishing features
  • The date and time you lost the item
  • The location where you lost the item
  • Your contact information
  • A copy of your Cornell ID card

The Risk Management and Insurance Department will investigate your claim and determine if you are eligible for reimbursement. If your claim is approved, you will receive a check for the value of your lost item.

The best way to avoid losing items on campus is to take precautions to keep them safe. Here are a few tips:

  • Keep your valuables in a secure place, such as a backpack or purse.
  • Don’t leave items unattended in public areas.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and watch out for people who may try to steal your belongings.
  • If you lose an item, report it to CUPD and check the Lost and Found immediately.
